This project was won as a competition and proceeded due to its size as a collaborative project with a team consisting of dlp and a Dutch Engineering Firm DHV. The group of buildings total 30,000m2 and consist of a Learning Centre, Small Scale Laboratory Building, Large Scale Test Hall, External Experiment Area and Site Utility Building. Together they form part of the larger, new Shell EpiCentre masterplan development outside Rotterdam. The concept for the design of this project started from the assessments we carried out of Shell’s operations and processes and was then designed from the inside out. A building where the functions were first considered, then made transparent, resulting in a sustainable solution that provided architecture suitable for the brand of Shell. The Learning Centre is designed to accommodate 250 international students and support additional students worldwide via distance learning. This building is Shell’s Global learning hot spot and not only caters for the students but also 100 support staff members.
The laboratory building, test hall and experiment area are the centre for Exploration and Production Research at Shell. Here flexible, high-tech space caters for finding new solutions to the ever changing exploration and production challenges that are constantly faced by large Energy Providers, and will continue to do so well into the future due to its size and flexibility. The Utilities Centre is designed as a state of the art power house for the EpiCentre Site.
