Sustainability | Island Stone

2020/10/19

Mattinson Associates, Isle of Wight Architects, explain why they love using local island stone on so many of their projects. Rich materiality is an important part of all of our design work and for a building to truly blend into its surroundings, it must be made with natural materials that wear gracefully in time like the occupants within them. Stone can give a building real identity and with careful consideration, can be sympathetic to the most sensitive of sites. Despite not being renewable, stone is a great material to use for sustainable projects, check out its eco-friendly qualities here: Natural Material The beauty of the stone is in its imperfections, with so many different textures, grains, shapes and colours, the natural material gives you a slice of nature that is unique to that specific piece. Particularly on the Isle of Wight, our local stone has a distinctive sandy colour that…(more)

Sustainability | Wellbeing & Sustainability Within A Commercial Environment

2020/10/7

Mattinson Associates, Architects on the Isle of Wight, have written why wellbeing and sustainability are so important in commercial environments. It is estimated that we spend ninety per cent of our time indoors; so, with issues such as Seasonal Affective Disorder and Sick Building Syndrome being caused by the spaces we live and work in, it’s important to understand how we can use sustainable, clever design to improve wellbeing within commercial environments. Check out the information below where it explains how, by improving sustainability within your office/retail/commercial space, it can improve wellbeing for clients, colleagues and collaborators. FSC Certified Timber Known to lower the sympathetic nervous system and contribute to decreasing stress, timber is non-toxic and can be an easier way to improve wellbeing quickly. Being breathable, renewable and non-toxic, it can create a healthier working environment. A study by Holzcluster Steiermark in Austria found that when comparing four classrooms,…(more)

Lockdown Life | The Future of Remodelling Post Lockdown

2020/8/24

Mattinson Associates Architects and Interior Designers based on the Isle of Wight explore how our homes will change post lockdown. Life is slowly starting to go back to some form of normal, however the majority of the country are still working from home. With sales of homes on the Isle of Wight increasing due to the popular appeal of escaping to the countryside or holidaymakers looking for a more permanent answer to staycationing, our homes are being reimagined more than ever. With this trend in mind, we have predicted how homes might change post lockdown.  The Rise of Separate Rooms:  Open plan living is a concept that many of our clients (and us) love – that dreamy entertaining space where family and friends can congregate and socialise with endless views out to the garden. However, during lockdown, because our homes have become temporary schools and offices, open plan living lacks…(more)

Heatwave Help | Reducing Overheating in Your Home

2020/8/24

Mattinson Associates, Architects and Interior Designers on the Isle of Wight have compiled some simple, cost effective measures to reduce overheating in your home this summer during a heatwave. After the scorching heatwave earlier this month and then torrential rain, our weather is becoming more extreme and sporadic than ever. Typically in Britain, our homes are built to retain heat, so when we are facing temperatures of up to 40°C, our homes are uncomfortable.  Ventilation Opening up windows can help reduce the heat of your property by preventing the build up of humidity and increasing air movement. Although opening a window when it’s hot sounds obvious, there are ways to be more strategic such as opening windows on both sides of the property to increase a through-draft, opening the windows towards the wind direction and opening a skylight to let the hot air out.  Shading Sun coming through windows will heat…(more)

Whether you need to chose a paint and can’t quite figure out if it’s Farrow & Ball Babouche or Little Green Lemon Mivvi you need, or if your children are using the dining room as playground and that box room upstairs filled with bits and bobs could do…(more)

Completed Project | Black Leaf House

2020/3/25

This month, Mattinson Associates Architect’s & Interior Designers completed one of our favourite jobs as of it – a black brick monolithic extension in Ryde, Isle of Wight. The existing house has been completely transformed to make a truly enchanting space. The rear of the house has been removed and replaced by a double storey rear extension alongside a single storey boundary extension. This has opened the house up to the magnificent views over the town and towards the sea.
