interior designers - Isle of Wight and beyond

as an integrated practice, when we design architecture, we will be looking to design both interior and landscaping to work in harmony with the structures and spaces created by the architecture.

Which rooms does an interior designer design?

Typically, our clients ask us to focus on kitchens and bathrooms, the main bedroom with its dressing areas and en suite bathroom and on the living spaces. Some ask us to focus on the whole house and from time to time we are asked for a full furnishing, fittings and equipment package of services.

Interior designers who focus on residential work as we do, will be able to design for any and all aspects of the house. When your passion is assisting client's to live well in their new homes, no space is out of scope.

We've designed boat storage, gyms and outdoor showers too.

What is the difference between an interior designer and decorator?

Similar to an interior decorator, who will recommend furnishings, fittings and decoration, Abbie Downer, the lead Interior Designer in the Mattinson Associates team, can specify and design these elements.

However, her primary focus is on synergy - how the interior spaces look, feel, function and flow and how these integrate with the architecture and landscaping.

The hallmark of her focus is attention to detail. This is applied to the design of detailed joinery, kitchen and bathroom design and integrating loved pieces of furniture and art. Our focus on the details ensures the interior spaces deliver the desired feel whether that be intimate, family spaces or expressive entertaining spaces.

She will specify precise details so that tiles are laid right for the space, that bunk rooms for children have enough head height, joinery for storage is designed to maximise the usable space.

In short, working with an interior designer, like Abbie, will deliver beauty and high functioning of the interior spaces, which work seemlessly with the architecture and landscaping. This means the whole will be so much more than the sum of the parts.

Can Mattinson Associates design for commercial and business premises?

As our process starts with a good brief and a thorough understanding of what the client is looking to achieve and how they want to use the spaces, Mattinson Associates is able to create interior design solutions for both residential and commercial projects.

Where a residential client may want the kitchen to be the hub of the entertainment space, a commercial client may need the kitchen to function highly efficiently so that food service is quick.

Either brief is achievable as every design starts with a blank sheet of paper and is designed to the budget and needs of the client.

How do you handle exterior lighting?

As part of the dark skies initiative, the Isle of Wight planners will require that the architectural specification of lighting for the exterior of the building is 'bat friendly' and does not create wasted light or light pollution.

We will typically cover this specification detail in our architectural package of services but for unusual sites or where extensive outdoor lighting is requested by our clients, Mattinson Associates will include exterior lighting and electrical connections as part of a landscaping package.

There is no hard and fast rule and we discuss this with clients during the course of the project so that the work we do meets the client's needs.

Can Mattinson Associates help with lighting design?

The use of light is a specialist skill and we are very happy to provide lighting design services. In your architectural package, the lighting we specify will be a fundamental element. There will be a detailed lighting plan with the location of switches, the types of switches and whether they are dimmable for example, designed into the architectural scheme.

For some clients, an interior design package of services will take this to the next level. Abbie will assist the client to achieve a particular style by specifying feature lighting. These would be off the shelf light fittings which would be specified and installed by the contractor as part of the build. We would source and specify the fitting that perfectly meets the brief.

For a few clients, bespoke light fittings are designed and detailed so that these can be made by a specialist lighting contractor or craftsman, for installation in the location they are designed for.

This range of services is something we can discuss with clients at the start of the RIBA workstage 4 when the architectural designs are being scaled up for building regulations sign off.
