conservation
passing on our heritage to the next generation
we approach heritage projects with a contextually driven, pragmatic approach that retains the sites’ history while creating new spaces fit for 21st century living
With extensive experience and a deep appreciation for iconic, historic architecture, Lindsay has successfully worked as a conservation architect for a number of clients. On these projects, Mattinson Associates incorporated sensitive design by reimagining, undertaking restoration and extension of numerous listed buildings and traditional homes. We provide solutions that English Heritage and conservation officers are proud to endorse. Our approach includes reusing traditional materials in a contemporary way, setting the old apart from the new, and celebrating the rich history while placing the new elements firmly in their modern context. In this way, the new co-exists with the old: new buildings complement harmoniously the older buildings and provide intriguing new contexts for the original building to inhabit.
The key to success is understanding the way that materials function: for example, breathable stone and traditional renders perform differently from modern materials and the fabric of the building can be put at risk if elements such as these are misunderstood. Our work has seen us recreate historic details and commission high-quality joiners and other craftsmen to recreate and preserve these with integrity. We also consult closely with our clients as well as local authorities, conservation bodies, quantity surveyors, chartered surveyors and structural engineers to ensure a holistically successful project is realised.
