Architecture that belongs - An experience designed around you

Mattinson Associates is an award-winning architectural practice based on the Isle of Wight, creating thoughtful, enduring buildings shaped by their place, purpose and the people who use them. From bespoke homes and sensitive heritage projects to commercial buildings and wider development opportunities, we combine creative design, technical expertise and more than 30 years of experience with a personal, carefully considered approach to every project.

Experience brings perspective. Judgement brings confidence.

30+ years experience 300+ projects 3 continents

Every place deserves its own architectural response.

We believe good architecture begins with understanding: the character of a place, the purpose of a building and the people who will use it. Every site brings its own opportunities and constraints, and every client has different aspirations. Our role is to bring these together in a considered architectural response that is appropriate to its setting, practical in its execution and designed to endure.

We don't impose a signature style on every project. Instead, we draw on experience, technical and local knowledge and creative thinking to develop architecture that belongs naturally to its surroundings and reflects the ambitions of those who commission it. Whether we are designing a contemporary home, adapting a historic building or exploring the potential of a larger site, the quality of the response matters more than a recognisable house style.

We don't design buildings that look like ours. We design buildings that belong.

Exceptional architecture deserves an exceptional experience.

Creating a building can be complex. Planning, technical requirements, budgets, consultants, contractors and countless decisions can make the process feel unfamiliar and overwhelming, particularly when the investment is significant. We believe clients deserve more than good design: they deserve clear advice, thoughtful communication and the confidence that experienced professionals are looking at the bigger picture.

At Mattinson Associates, we take the time to understand what matters to you, explain the decisions ahead and guide you through the process with honesty and care. We challenge assumptions when necessary, anticipate potential issues and help you understand not only what we recommend, but why. Our structured approach brings clarity to complexity, helping you make informed decisions without feeling that you need to become an architect, planner or construction expert yourself.

Our commitment to the client experience is not an addition to our architectural service. It is fundamental to how we practise. We believe the journey to creating a building should be designed with as much care as the building itself.

Experienced judgement. Honest advice. Confidence from the first conversation.

One architectural practice. A considered, integrated approach.

Our services bring together architecture, interior design, landscape design and conservation architecture to create buildings and places that work as a whole. We can provide advice at the earliest stages of an opportunity, develop a design, prepare planning and listed building applications, produce technical and construction information, assist with tendering and provide construction-stage services where appointed.

You can engage us for a specific stage or service, or ask us to guide the project from initial feasibility through to completion. The right level of involvement depends on the brief, the building and what you need from us.

Architecture

Architecture shaped by place and purpose.

From bespoke new-build homes and extensions to commercial buildings, development opportunities and masterplans, we create considered architectural responses that balance design ambition with practical, technical and planning requirements.

Interior Design

Interiors that belong to the architecture.

We bring together space planning, materials, lighting, joinery, finishes and furnishings to create interiors that feel coherent with the building and work beautifully for the people who use them.

Landscape Design

A considered relationship between building and landscape.

From private gardens and coastal properties to wider sites, we consider the landscape as an integral part of the architectural response, connecting buildings with their surroundings and creating spaces that are purposeful, distinctive and enduring.

Conservation Architecture

Respecting historic character. Designing for the future.

We work with listed buildings, historic properties and sensitive settings, balancing an understanding of historic fabric with the requirements of contemporary use. Our approach combines careful investigation, contextual design and experience of planning and conservation processes.

Different projects. One enduring philosophy.

Our experience spans a broad range of buildings, sites and project types. High-end residential architecture is a particular specialism, but our approach extends to historic properties, commercial projects, development opportunities and master planning. What connects this work is a commitment to understanding the context, defining the right brief and bringing creativity and technical expertise together to achieve a considered result.

Whether you are planning a new home, transforming an existing property, adapting a listed building, exploring the potential of a site or considering a commercial or larger-scale development, we begin by understanding your objectives and the opportunities available. We then tailor our involvement to the project's scale, complexity and requirements.

Residential architecture

Bespoke new-build homes, extensions, renovations, coastal properties and second homes, designed around the people who will live in them.

Heritage and conservation

Listed buildings, historic properties, conservation areas and sensitive sites where context, careful judgement and an understanding of historic fabric are essential.

Development and master planning

Feasibility, site potential and strategic design thinking for projects that require a wider view of planning, place, connections and future use.

Coastal and countryside sites

Architecture that responds to landscape, exposure, local character and the opportunities and constraints of sensitive locations.

Experience that brings clarity to complexity.

A successful building depends on more than a good idea. It requires a clear brief, informed design decisions, a sound understanding of planning and technical requirements, careful coordination and attention to detail throughout delivery. After more than 30 years in practice, we understand how decisions made early in a project can influence its cost, programme, buildability and long-term performance.

We use a structured process, informed by the RIBA Plan of Work, to help clients navigate each stage with greater clarity. From initial feasibility and concept design through planning, technical information, tender and construction-stage involvement, we adapt our services to the requirements of the project. We identify what needs to be resolved, explain the choices available and help clients make informed decisions before avoidable problems become expensive ones.

Anyone can follow a process. Experience tells you how to use it.

Good architecture. A relationship built on trust.

Our clients' experiences matter as much as the buildings we create. Their words reflect our commitment to listening carefully, providing honest advice and combining creative thinking with the experience needed to deliver successful projects.

“Mattinson Associates provided a stunning modern design for our pool house, carefully tailored to sit well within the context of adjacent listed buildings surrounding our courtyard. Importantly they have experience and sound judgement in the planning process and they dealt with material selection, the building tender, contract and supervision. We would be happy to recommend Mattinson Associates. They are engaged in the main house refurbishment for us and we are well pleased with their work.”

— Owner, The Pool House

“We had never undertaken a project of this size before but from our first meeting with Lindsay, we knew that she and her team would be able to realise our dream. We had ideas of our own and Mattinsons built open these, adding their imagination and vision to create what we feel is a stunning home for the 21st Century. We are absolutely delighted with how they have overseen the project and we cannot thank them enough.”

— Owner, Black Leaf House

“We commissioned Mattinson Associates/Lindsay Mattinson to help us adapt our listed Jacobean manor house into a family home that worked for us. Lindsay provided an excellent and professional service, offering creative and sympathetic new perspectives on our thinking, as well as ensuring that the planning process was swift and without hitch. The Heritage Statement which she produced was a masterpiece, as well as the plans and line drawings, which really brought the proposed exterior look-and-feel to life.”

— Owner, The Estate

Every great project starts with a conversation.

You may have a detailed brief, a property you want to transform, a site you are considering or simply an idea you would like to explore. Wherever you are in the process, we can help you understand the opportunities, identify the questions that need answering and consider the right next steps.

At Mattinson Associates, we believe choosing an architect should begin with confidence, not pressure. Our first conversation is an opportunity to understand what you want to achieve, discuss how we might help and establish whether our experience and approach are right for your project.

Tell us what you have in mind. We'll start by listening.
