Developing rural sites often presents a challenge, as the process can be contentious within the local community. With this in mind, we sought a solution that would seamlessly blend into the rural landscape without drawing undue attention, while still being appealing to self-build buyers and distinct from the typical mass housing developments seen elsewhere. The brief required flexibility to allow for variation but also needed to maintain a level of uniformity that resonated with the rural demographic.

In response, we designed a series of buildings inspired by traditional farm structures, characterized by barn-like proportions and narratives. This approach led to the creation of three distinct material palettes, each chosen for their complementary qualities. These palettes provide individuality to each unit while ensuring that the development maintains a cohesive and unified aesthetic. Whether for smaller or larger homes, this design solution balances variety with harmony, ensuring the development feels both unique and deeply rooted in its rural context.
